Maddy's Story

Meet Maddy! Maddy works for Deaf Connect as a Booking Officer, while also studying her Certificate II in Auslan.

Maddy was inspired to learn Auslan growing up with a friend with deaf parents and says it’s a pleasure to be able to build her skills to better communicate with the Deaf community.

Maddy’s work puts her in touch with the community as she supports them to book Auslan interpreters for social and professional situations.

“Because I work with a lot of deaf people and communicate with them, it helps me a lot with my study. I love the community, the staff – I just love my job!”

Maddy is completing her Cert II in Auslan with Deaf Connect, a course she wholeheartedly encourages others to consider.

“I like that it’s a different mode of communication, where it’s visual but not spoken. It’s a beautiful language, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn.”

Maddy, like many of our education students, says she hopes her qualifications can take her even further.

“I want to meet new people, do all the certificates, diplomas, sit my NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) test and become an interpreter one day.”
