Deaf Services Queensland Joins the Team
CEO Deaf Services Queensland
It is with great pleasure that I announce Deaf Services Queensland’s newest venture, a partnership with Deaf Basketball Australia sponsoring the Australian Men’s Deaf Basketball team: the Goannas.
As the naming rights sponsor of the Goannas, Deaf Services Queensland are making it possible for the team to travel to the 23rd Summer Deaflympics hosted in Samsun, Turkey in July this year. Since 1924, the Deaflympics has fostered camaraderie and celebrated Deaf achievement. These two goals perfectly align with Deaf Services Queensland’s mission to see the community empowered, connected and achieving.
Deaf Services Queensland is always open to initiatives that support and develop opportunities for the Deaf and hard of hearing community. In addition to our core services, Deaf Services Queensland provides biannual Life Enrichment Grants to support community members achieve their goals and has provided event and conference sponsorship in the past. This latest venture —supporting the Goannas—takes our celebration of Deaf achievement to the international stage.

Watching the Goannas’ journey to win gold at the Asia Pacific Championships and to rank fifth in the world in Deaf Basketball has been inspiring. This has been a momentous leap forward for both the team and Australian Deaf Sport.
As the Goannas prepare for the Deaflympics, this partnership will not only support the team, but will encourage the drive for excellence in Deaf and hard of hearing youth in all aspects of their lives.

The Goannas are role models as a team and as individual members of the Deaf community. They highlight the importance of non-verbal communication and cohesiveness while being representative of the full spectrum of Deafness and communicative styles.
Supporting The Goannas’ quest for gold at the 2017 Deaflympics is particularly important to me as it fulfils our vision of individuals and the community empowered, connected and achieving. Deaf Services Queensland is excited to be supporting this important period of development for the team and for Australian Deaf sport.
