Rockhampton Community Morning Tea
Rockhampton Ageing Well Support Worker Ann Kennedy has provided us with a lovely update on Deaf Services' monthly community gatherings in Rockhampton.
Every month senior members of the Deaf community gather for morning tea, socializing and fun. Deaf Services' Ageing Well program provides the venue and transport to and from the venue. Each person provides a plate of food to share. The community came together initially because they were bored and isolated and wanted to meet up with other people who could communicate using Auslan.
The month of May we made it a special Mother’s Day celebration with Lucky door prize and pretty girly settings. The only two men in the group had to have a play off for the door prize- a packet of heart shaped pink iced biscuits. I couldn’t believe they both wanted the pink biscuits!
In June we introduced Winter with a snowball fight and made paper snowflakes. Each member receives a newsletter with health ideas and general local interest stories as well as word puzzles which they like to take home and read later.
The Deaf seniors have put their own ideas into the morning and now bring board games to play after the morning tea. It can get very competitive, some of them forget to go home. Its been good fun and the Deaf community come back each month to join in with whatever is happening.
