Kicking Goals with Auslan Footy!
Over three big weekends we were thrilled to recently deliver AFL skills clinics to over 60 deaf and hard of hearing kids and their families!
The Auslan Footy program was made possible through funding from The Deaf Lottery, along with the support of the Yeronga South Brisbane Football Club.
The program was led by Mia Walsh, an Occupational Therapist with our early intervention service Hear for Kids and Yeronga Devils club captain, along with Deaf teammate Jamie Howell who works alongside Mia at Yeerongpilly Early Childhood Development Program.
As well as being the driving force behind this event, Mia and Jamie went viral last year after the entire Yeronga Devils team learned Auslan to perform the team song!
This year, Jamie was also named the 2021 AFL Women's Premiership Cup Ambassador, presenting the winning trophy to the Brisbane Lions.
Equally important to the AFL skills was the opportunity for families to come together and connect over a social post-footy BBQ!
We received an avalanche of positive feedback from both kids and parents, and hope to be able to offer more Auslan Footy very soon!
