Meet Roslyn from Hear for Kids
Meet Teacher of the Deaf and Auslan Tutor Roslyn Serginson
Roslyn Serginson is part of our Hear for Kids team based in North Queensland. We asked her to chat about her work and what Hear for Kids can offer families wherever they live and whatever their needs.
I have two roles with Deaf Services and the Deaf Society: as a Teacher of the Deaf with Hear for Kids in Cairns, and as an Auslan Tutor.
I first started working for Deaf Services and the Deaf Society back in 2014 as an Auslan Short Course Tutor and when I moved to Cairns in 2017, I began teaching Community Auslan Courses and progressed to supporting students undertaking Certificate Courses.
Since the beginning of 2020, I’ve been supporting students all over Queensland via Zoom to help them improve their Auslan skills.
For the last six months I have been in my role as Teacher of the Deaf with Hear for Kids for two days a week. As the only Teacher of the Deaf in North Queensland, I have been very busy!
I do love coming to work, though. The most rewarding thing is meeting with families and seeing how much their children are progressing.
The beauty of Hear for Kids is that the families have the option of choosing any communication method that best suits their child, supported by a range of trained therapists.
I am profoundly Deaf, and grew up in a hearing world in a country town, so I understand well how important flexibility of support is when you’re young.
I am proud to be part of this organisation, and hope that more families with newly-identified deaf and hard of hearing children – particularly in North Queensland – are aware we are here to support them.
