Interpreting Skills for NAATI Certification Testing

This course will satisfy the training, English proficiency and Ethical competency prerequisites for Certified Provisional Interpreter testing with NAATI under Pathway 4 (See NAATI’s Certification Scheme Design document)   Students MAY also be required to sit an Intercultural Competency test with NAATI.

This course is designed for people who are already proficient in both languages, either through lived experiences or through a long involvement with the community and who are already in situations where they work between languages and wish to meet the eligibility requirements to sit the NAATI certification test.

This course has been designed in consideration of the access needs of regional/remote students who cannot access the full PSP90516 Diploma of Interpreting course and will be delivered in a blended delivery mode. Preference will be offered to students in regional areas.

COURSE DELIVERY

  • Blended delivery: Online learning + 3 full weekends of face to face training in Brisbane
  • 15 weeks (excluding school holidays)

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

Students will complete 4 units from the Diploma of Interpreting:

  • PSPTIS001 Apply codes and standards to ethical practice
  • PSPTIS002 Build glossaries for translating and interpreting assignments
  • PSPTIS003 Prepare to translate and interpret
  • PSPTIS042 Manage discourses in general settings

This will be delivered online across 15 weeks with students also attending 3 full weekends of training in Brisbane at the Deaf Services office.

In addition, students will have access to 15 practice interpreting texts online for review and self-assessment and will be able to compare their performance to a working certified provisional interpreter or a certified interpreter.  The weekend workshops will provide opportunities to use their practice their interpreting skills in simulated environments with a range of guests and teachers. 

Students must allocate additional time during the 15 weeks for private student and completion of learning and assessment tasks.  Students are also require to have computer skills and access to a computer in order to complete online activities and assessments.

The course requires successful completion of 10 assessment tasks which will be a combination of in-class discussions, activities and presentations as well as assignments, short answer response tasks and projects to be completed outside of class.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All candidates will be required to sit a skills test in Auslan and in English in order to demonstrate language proficiency in both languages before being eligible to enrol.

WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

The face to face component of this training will be held at Deaf Services (915 Ipswich Road, Moorooka) on the following weekends:

  • Workshop 1 
  • Workshop 2  
  • Workshop 3                        

COURSE OUTCOME

COST/PAYMENT

Full Fee: $1,800.00*                                                     

A deposit of $500 is due upon acceptance into this course with the balance as per individual payment plans.
